The Best Skill a Photographer Can Have

When it comes to looking at the work of some of the best photographers in the game, it’s easy to fall into the misconception that they can just produce amazing photos out of thin air or react instinctively to the world around them.

Funnily enough though they don’t have superpowers, nor do they live a life in which beautiful compositions just fall in front of them.

They’re simply just patient.

Now I could just tell you to be more patient in this blog, but instead I wanted to share this actionable three step process of patience that you can apply the next time you’re out taking photos.

The Observation

Often you’ll know when you’re in a spot worth shooting, even if you’re not entirely sure why - just think of it as the photography equivalent of Spidey Sense.

Don’t let this confusion trick you into moving on. Instead pause, notice the light around you, the shapes and lines that make up the environment, and any frames worth taking a photo of.

The Wait

You’ve got a composition in mind, and now you get in position and wait. It might feel awkward doing nothing, but there’s no better feeling than your patience being rewarded with the frame you had in mind.

The Repeat

Take it from me, not everything goes right first time. Being patient and taking multiple renditions of the ‘same’ shot can ensure you’ve got things as perfect as they can be. For example sharpness, someone caught exactly mid stride, or an entirely more interesting subject appearing.

This last step can make a good photo, a great one.
